Education Think Tank Africa Education Watch is worried that the GETFund may no longer serve its purpose in the future since accruals from it are diverted for budgetary support in other sectors.
The Tink tank explains that the amended Earmarked Funds Capping and Realignment Act (Act 947) passed in December 2022 will see close to 80% of the GETFund monies diverted.
Speaking during a policy brief on Ghana’s IMF program and its implication on public education the Executive Secretary of the think tank Kofi Asare says the impact will lead to the fund not being able to create the fiscal space to invest into the country’s educational sector.
“Between 2018 and 2022, about 3.7 billion cedis of cash that were supposed to go into building schools have been diverted while the education sector need funding.”
“We continue to plead with the Select Committee on education that GETFund is uncapped so that funds meant for education can be fully used for education.”
