The Eastern Regional Security Council REGSEC has urged the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) to deepen its education and visibility in the region to help reduce and possibly prevent road accidents.
18 lives were lost in 3 separate accidents in the region over the weekend, a situation the regional security council has described as worrying and unfortunate.
In an interview with journalists on recent road accidents in the region, the Eastern Regional Minister and chairman of REGSEC, Seth Kwame Acheampong, urged the NRSA to work closely with the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) to remain visible at all times on roads to help reduce the carnage.
“We will only encourage the NSRA to deepen its campaign. We are about to end the first quarter, initiating for us as the second quarter is the Easter festivities, which is also very busy. I want to use this opportunity to tell managers of the various institutions that govern our conduct on our roads to up their game within the region. So that we are able to prevent some of these accidents”.
He called on road users to be very observant and defensive when using roads.
“I want to entreat my fellow road users to be very observant and defensive in nature when they are using the roads. It’s very sad to lose a life, and it’s very expensive for the country to lose a life. So I wouldn’t want us to experience losses of lives in one set of accidents, however, it has happened,” he urged.
Mr. Acheampong further charged the MTTD to beef up their game to bring sanity to the roads in the region.
“I also want to encourage the MTTD road safety campaign and other allied agencies who help us in our corridors to bring sanity onto our roads. And also up their game, I want to thank them for being responsive when we have had issues,” he said.
