The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has commenced the installation of 40,000 new meters across the Western Region today, Wednesday, July 5, 2023, to address the huge deficit of electricity meter applicants and replacements of old meters.
Speaking to Citi News in Takoradi during the installation of some of the newly supplied 40,000 meters at selected homes in Takoradi, the Regional Manager of ECG, Emmanuel Justice Ofori, warned against illegal electricity connections and the purchase of meters from “goro boys.”
He said that the ECG had enough meters to install for both new applicants and the replacement of outdated meters.
Mr. Ofori therefore used the opportunity to encourage the public to apply for their meters with improved technology.
Meanwhile, some of the first beneficiaries of the new meters spoke to Citi News about the improved technology they come with.
Grace Mensah, an ECG customer in Takoradi, said, “It’s been over six months since I applied for the meter, but they called last week to inform me that they were coming with the meter today. I’m happy because I was initially asked to buy a black cable for the installation, which was expensive, but they installed it for me for free. I’m grateful to ECG, but I would urge them to also satisfy others who need meters so that they can do their work. The technology is also good because it will end the struggles of buying power.”
Another customer, Emmanuel Ansah, also said, “We thank ECG for the meters because they will help our work as well as the students in the hostels.”
