President Akufo-Addo has called on the big global powers to reform the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to give the rest of the world a say on global issues other than the permanent members (powerful few) such as the US, China, Russia, UK and France.
Ghana’s President was speaking at the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, USA.
The meeting which is a high-level political forum of the UN is under the theme: “Rebuilding Trust and Reigniting Global Solidarity: Accelerating Action on the 2030 Agenda and UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Towards Peace, Prosperity, Progress and Sustainability for All”.
Taking his turn during the Assembly on September 20, 2023 President Akufo-Addo expressed concern about the current composure of the UN Security Council labeling it as undemocratic.
He further used his address to make a passinate call on the need for reparations to be paid to African and African countries who were hugely impacted by the transatlantic slave trade.
Ghana’s major treasures were taken away during the slave trade era and has been a concern for decades.
The 78th UN General Assembly saw global leaders discuss issues of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), pandemic prevention, Tuberculosis among others.
