Two out of three persons who were apprehended by residents of Adaklu Tsrefe in the Volta Region while attempting to steal a transformer in the community have been sentenced to five years each.
The suspects were discovered by a hunter who raised an alarm, leading to their arrest on Thursday, October 5.
The two pleaded guilty to charges of stealing and attempting to destroy public property.
The Public Relations Officer for the Electricity Company of Ghana, Benjamin Obeng Antwi, who was present at the court, cautioned the public against such acts and urged them to assist the company in preventing such activities.
“Lately, cases of transformer theft as well as service cable theft are on the rise in our operational areas. Some individuals have made it their business to cut wires serving customers just to extract the copper embedded in them. Additionally, customers are vandalizing our transformers to obtain important components.
This is the current situation, so we would like the general public to be on the lookout for such thieves. If you see anyone working in your locality and the person is not an ECG staff or you suspect the person is not an ECG staff, kindly report to the nearest police station. The actions of these individuals prevent us from delivering on our core mandate,” said Benjamin Obeng Antwi.a
