Stakeholders in the educational sector have called on the government to dismiss teachers who colluded with students to cheat in the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
They expressed concern about the escalation in exam room collusion, as mentioned by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) during the WASSCE 2023.
This was communicated in a statement issued by Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch) and the Institute for Education Studies (IFEST) on Friday.
“While we acknowledge the gains made bythe Ministry of Education in curbing question leakages by involving the National Bureau of Investigations in providing security for the printing of questions, we lament the weak and ineffective prosecution of suspects, as well as the sanctions for teachers and other public officers found to have colluded with candidates.”
“Stakeholders call for the withdrawal of the license and outright dismissal of teachers who collude with students to cheat, the decoupling of teachers from the conduct of WASSCE, deployment of CCTV cameras at exam centers, and strengthened external supervision of the WASSCE, including the involvement of religious bodies and CSOs,” they stated.
The stakeholders emphasized that individuals cited by WAEC for illegal activities around WASSCE 2023 should be prosecuted, and outcomes should be published.
“The support of the Attorney General’s Department and the Ghana Police Service is crucial to achieving successful WASSCE 2023 prosecutions,” they added.
