New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reiterated his promise to benchmark import levies with that of Togo to reduce smuggling of goods into the country.
According to the Vice President, the high cost of import duties at Ghana’s ports forces importers to rather use Togo ports and illegally smuggle goods into the country.
A situation he says has resulted in a reduction of revenue for the country.
At a meeting with the council of indigenous business associations made up of traders within the informal sector, Dr. Bawumia noted that the system will be such that Ghana’s import duties will either be at the same level or below that of neighboring Togo.
“I have watched their system and I am seeking to implement the same. God willing if I become the president, Ghana’s import duty will not be more than that of Lomé.
“Our new import policy will make our import duty less than that of Lomé or similar. When we do that, nobody will think of smuggling. The containers that used to come into the country will resume and then there will be jobs for everybody,” he stated.
