Theovision International, a Christian non-profit, and the Bible Society of Ghana have pledged their commitment to collaborate with the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to prevent the loss of indigenous languages.
These organizations have voiced their concerns about the increasing influence and recent influx of foreign cultures in Ghanaian society.
They believe that a proactive and robust effort from all stakeholders is necessary to safeguard and maintain local languages.
Edward Fianko Antwi, the Senior Group Leader at Theovision International, expressed his concerns to Citi News during the launch of the Old Testament audio Bible in the Ga language.
He supports the proposal for the use of Ghanaian languages in parliament and affirms their readiness to work with the Ministry of Education to preserve this vital heritage.
Rev. Charles Adu Twumasi, the Head of Programmes at the Bible Society of Ghana, called for heightened awareness about the declining interest in local languages.
He believes a national debate on this critical issue could help in the preservation of local languages.
Meanwhile, in a bid to protect local languages from extinction, Theovision International, a Christian non-profit organization, has launched an audio version of the Old Testament Bible in the Ga language.
This initiative, which primarily aims to preserve the local language and aid in spreading the gospel, comes 25 years after the first recording of the New Testament’s audio version.
Theovision International, along with its partners, has produced audio Bibles in over 470 indigenous languages across 36 African countries, including 43 Ghanaian languages.
Edward Fianko Antwi, the Senior Group Leader at Theovision International, shared in an interview with Citi News that spreading the gospel in one’s mother tongue has additional benefits, such as passing down values to future generations.
This discussion took place on the sidelines of a brief event at the Teshie Presby Church to launch the Ga language’s Old Testament audio Bible.
Rev. Charles Adu Twumasi, the Head of Programmes for the Bible Society, expressed his excitement about the milestone and believes it will touch many lives.
