Kwaku Agyeman Kwarteng, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Obuasi West, and Elijah Adansi-Bonah, the Chief Executive for the Obuasi Municipal Assembly, on Thursday, April 4, 2024, surveyed the damage caused by a rainstorm at Koffekrom in the Obuasi Municipality.
The storm, which occurred on March 28, 2024, displaced over 500 people and damaged about 60 buildings. The most severely affected areas included Bogobiri, Obuasi Senior High Technical School, and AngloGold Ashanti School.
Accompanied by the Assembly member for the area and some party officials, the MP and the MCE visited the chief’s palace and the Obuasi Sec Tech campus.
At the Chief’s palace, Mr Kwarteng expressed his condolences for the loss of valuable properties during the storm and assured the victims that he would coordinate with the Municipal Assembly and the central government to provide the necessary support.
“I must applaud the MCE for visiting you earlier. After an assessment by NADMO and the Engineers of the Assembly, GHC1.5 million is needed to compensate our victims. My office is in talks with the Assembly to fast-track the process to raise this amount.’
Following the tour, the MP spoke to the media, emphasizing the need for a collective effort to refurbish some of the school buildings. He pledged to spearhead the refurbishment of the school’s science resource centre.
Mr Kwarteng also urged Ghanaians, companies, and institutions to contribute to the rebuilding of the Koffekrom community.
The MP announced plans to construct a mechanized borehole for the ‘Bayport’ section of the community, fulfilling a previous promise.
The Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive stated that re-roofing one of the dormitories of Obuasi Secondary Technical, which was affected by the rains, is a priority for the Assembly. He explained that NADMO officials and some officers of the Assembly were sent to assess the situation and report back. The report is now ready, and the Assembly will act on it promptly.
Mr Adansi-Bonah noted that the displaced individuals have been provided with alternative accommodation by the Assembly. He commended Abadwumhene Nana Professor Amoako Atta for his earlier donation to the community and called on others to support the government’s efforts in aiding the victims.
He assured that the Assembly would enhance education on disaster prevention and management.
Ernest Wiafe, the Headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, acknowledged the swift measures taken by the Obuasi Municipal Assembly to re-roof some of the buildings.
Nana Kojo Obeng, Odikro of Koffekrom, expressed gratitude to the MP and the MCE for their concern and empathy.
