Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, the President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), has called for improved service conditions for nurses and midwives.
She suggested that a salary of GH¢10,000 would be suitable for entry-level nurses.
She further proposed that GH¢20,000 would be an appropriate salary for chief nursing officers.
This was stated by the GRNMA President during an interview on TV3’s Hot Issue on Sunday, March 31, 2024.
“For the least person working as a nurse, a composite salary of GH¢10,000 will be ideal. For chief nursing officers, the ideal salary should be at least GH¢20,000,” she stated.
Mrs Ofori-Ampofo emphasised that the current service conditions for nurses and midwives in Ghana are not optimal compared to other countries.
She mentioned that the Association is currently negotiating with the employer and has put forward proposals on what nurses and midwives deserve.
Securing these conditions, according to Mrs Ofori-Ampofo, would encourage nurses and midwives to continue serving the country effectively and discourage them from seeking opportunities abroad.
“If you ask me to describe it in a word or two, I will tell you it is not the best. It is not the best because when you compare it to our compatriots who are in high-income countries or other countries where conditions are better, it is far better than what we have here. But we understand that the economy of Ghana is not the same as in these other countries. The situation of remuneration and other conditions of service cannot be the same but currently, we are on the negotiation table, we are negotiating our conditions of service, the collective agreement that is in force now expired and we are negotiating it.”
“We have made a number of proposals to the employer to say that this is what we deserve as nurses and midwives. If we can get them it will help us retain our nurses, those who are eager to migrate outside,” she stated.
