The Greater Accra Regional Security Council has decided to demolish all structures sited on Ramsar sites within the region.
In a statement, buildings erected on Ramsar sites have been a major cause of flooding, thus, causing havoc to individuals living in the region.
Acting on its mandate backed by the Security and Intelligence Agencies Act 2020 (Act 1030) which supports the Council in taking steps to ensure law and order, the REGSEC in a meeting on Tuesday, May 7, has decided to take over all Ramsar sites, with immediate effect and declare them as security zones.
“The Regional Co-ordinating Council is, however, liaising with the appropriate authorities i.e. Forestry and Lands Commission to regularise structures located outside the core zone of the Ramsar.
“Additionally, REGSEC will work with appropriate authorities to demolish structures within the core zone of the Ramsar”, the statement emphasized.
It also added that the exercise will be undertaken in alliance with personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces, and warned of prosecution of individuals who flout the law.
“The Ramsar site located within the Tema Metropolitan, Tema West Municipal, Ablekuma West Municipal and the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assemblies have been declared a security zone and effective today, Tuesday, 7th May 2024, REGSEC has taken over the security of the Ramsar sites.
“The areas affected included Klagon, Adjei-Kojo, areas around the Sakumono Lagoon in the Tema West Municipal Assembly and Tema Communities 3, 6, 10, 11 and 12 within the Tema Metropolitan Assembly”, the letter stated.
REGSEC in its press release also cited Mansralor, Opetekwei and Otodjor in the Ablekuma West Municipality and the Weija-Malam junction enclave and Lafa River area in the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly as security zones.
