The Ministry of Information has unveiled plans to bolster the safety of journalists, particularly during election periods, through a programme known as the Coordinated Mechanism on safety of Journalists.
This initiative aims to provide financial and legal assistance to journalists who suffer assaults while performing their duties.
During a courtesy visit to the management of Citi TV and Citi FM in Accra on Monday, the Minister of Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, underscored the commitment to fostering partnerships for a vibrant media landscape.
“It is our intention that the coordinated mechanism on the safety of journalists which we run in collaboration with the NMC would be properly funded, reorganised properly so that if there is any such incidence, the journalist will have the comfort and confidence that if I want to pursue justice or any legal course of action, I am not alone.
Samuel Attah-Mensah, the Managing Director of Citi TV/Citi FM, welcomed the initiative and emphasised the organisation’s determination to support in every way possible to achieve the same goal.
“We welcome this and we also want to express our excitement and motivation to support in achieving same because you know the sanctity of the media tells a lot about the health of the nation itself.
“In the media field it is our duty to support any and everything that will help put the country in a better light,” he stated.
