The Power Distribution Services (PDS) Ghana, Volta region, has improved electricity supply to the newly created Oti region by evacuating power from the Bulk Supply Point (BSP) at Nsuta, a suburb of Kadjebi.
The BSP which is a joint project by PDS and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) was completed in December 2018 and commissioned on January 30, 2019.
A Bulk Supply Point (BSP) is the point where PDS purchases power from GRIDCo in bulk for sub-transmission and distribution.
There are seven Bulk Supply Points in the Volta and Oti regions located at Asiekpe, Aflao, Sogakope, Ho, Kpando, Kpeve, and the newly commissioned Kadjebi BSP.
According to Ing. Delali Oklu, General Manager for PDS, Volta/Oti Regions, “before the commissioning of the newly constructed Kadjebi BSP, customers in the Oti region depended on the Kpando BSP for supply which is very far from some communities like Dambai and Nkwanta. The distance through which electricity had to travel to get to these towns led to low voltage and power fluctuations which resulted in unstable power supply in the Oti region”.
Ing Oklu also noted that “the Kadjebi BSP was commissioned by PDS as a permanent solution to the challenge in the quality of electricity supply in the Oti region”.
Ing. Oklu assured the people of the Oti region of the Power Distribution Services (PDS) Ghana’s commitment to “improving the PDS end of the BSP to further enhance the quality and reliability of supply to the Oti Region”.
The project which took about two years to complete has an installed capacity of 10 MVA.
Ing. Jones Makumator, Regional Engineer for PDS, Volta/Oti regions, said “the
Kadjebi BSP will enhance the quality of power supply and reliability in the communities under the three operational districts (Jasikan, Nkwanta, and Dambai) of PDS in the Oti region and all customers in the Oti region”.
According to Ing. Makumator, some benefits of the newly commissioned BSP includes the Improvement of the voltage profile of the supply system leading to increased reliability and quality which in his opinion will “attract investors to the newly created Oti region”.
The new Bulk Supply Point, BSP will lead to a reduction in system losses.
The District Chief Executive of the Kadjebi District Assembly, Maxwell Kofi Asiedu
commended PDS for commissioning the BSP to augment the power situation in the Oti region. Dr. Asiedu indicated that “since the operationalization of the Kadjebi BSP, the quality of supply in the region has improved and the issues of power fluctuations and low voltage have also been curtailed”.
