The month of October each year is set aside as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the world at large observes this month in various ways.
In line with this, FBNBank joined the rest of the world to observe the Breast Cancer Awareness Month which is a yearly campaign to increase the understanding and education on breast cancer.
The theme for this year’s celebration is, Thrive 365: Put Her First. FBNBank held its main event was held its annual breast cancer awareness seminar at the conference room of its head office. It also partnered with the Airport Women Hospital (AWH) to screen both staff and customers of the bank. The global goal for this year’s theme is aimed at supporting women who are affected and impacted by breast cancer.
Delivering the keynote address, Mrs. Naomi Ohene Oti, Head of Nursing, National Radiotherapy Oncology and Nuclear Medicine at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital advised that women need to make conscious efforts to reduce their risk of exposure to breast cancer by living a healthy lifestyle and advised women to engage in regular exercises to prevent them from getting breast cancer and other diseases. She added that, “there have been studies that have shown that your risk factor for breast cancer is due to a combination of factors. Some women are likely to get breast cancer even without any other risk factors.”
She further stated that, “in 2018, there was an estimated 18 million cancer cases in the world and 2020 saw a rise in cancer cases to 19.3 million new cases out of which 11.7 percent was breast cancer, which was the leading case.”
Also present at the event was Mrs. Afia Appiah, a breast cancer survivor who shared her experience. According to her, “family members must not abandon breast cancer victims but rather encourage them to seek early treatment by showing them love and care. I was able to undergo successful treatment based on the love and care I enjoyed from my family and loved ones.” She emphasized the need for regular self-checks as early detection gives you a very good chance of survival.
The Managing Director of FBNBank, Victor Yaw Asante who also addressed the gathering said, “as we observe and create awareness and fight against breast cancer, we need to act as a support system to all persons who are affected and encourage each and everyone to get screened because early detection saves lives. He congratulated the FBNBank Women Network for making this an annual programme.”

In line with the celebration and creating awareness, the bank has donated GHS10,000 to the National Radiotherapy Oncology and Nuclear Medicine unit of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to help in their advocacy.
