Vida Addison Sackey, the widow of the late assemblyman of the Teberebie electoral area election, Manasseh Addison Sackey, who won the District Level Elections (DLEs) held yesterday, says she was overwhelmed by her late husband’s victory.
Although she admitted her strong conviction of her late husband’s victory despite his absence, she said she was touched by the affection and strong recognition of her late husband’s goodness by the electorates.
Despite the tragic incident of his drowning in a river connecting Aklika on Tuesday, December 5, Mr. Sackey, popularly known as Teacher Obour, was reelected in Tuesday’s DLEs after securing 860 votes.
His closest contender, Benard Obeng, trailed closely with 857 votes, while Michael Dompreh garnered 637 votes.
The late assemblyman had been actively campaigning to seek re-election to continue his service to the Teberebie community when he drowned on his way to visit a remote community.
Speaking in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Wednesday, Mrs. Sackey said she did not campaign for her late husband after his demise but voted for him in the DLEs.
“I used to support him in the work he did. If I had any advice, I gave him… After his death, I didn’t go anywhere. All the work was done by his campaign team. I didn’t do anything. I didn’t go anywhere. All I did was, on the 19th, I went out and voted for my husband. I voted for him because he is the one I am supposed to vote for. And since his face is on the ballot paper, I have to vote, and it is my right to vote.”
“I didn’t talk to anyone. They had made their decisions already. I didn’t tell anyone to go and vote for my husband. I was confident that my husband would win this election. That was all I wanted to know… I was overwhelmed because I realized the people had seen the good work of my husband and appreciated him, whether he was alive or not.”
Mrs. Sackey further said that she had not been approached to run in her late husband’s stead but would consult others if the people wanted her to represent them.
“No one has asked me to go on the ballot, and I have not received any offers… For now, I can’t say yes unless they ask me to. If they ask me, I will seek advice and know the stepI will take,” she said.
Meanwhile, the campaign team of the late assemblyman says they continued campaigning for him to win so they could have a bye-election.
The team also said they were ready to support the wife of the late assemblyman to contest and win the election.
