Security Analyst Colonel Festus Aboagye (Rtd.) is urging the government to be firm in its appointment of a Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).
The comment comes in response to concerns raised by the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, who stated that he had been at the receiving end of attacks following his purported appointment as CDS.
In an interview with Citi News, Colonel Festus Aboagye said such instances would be on the rise if the appointment of a new CDS were delayed.
He further urged the government to be fair and diligent to ensure deserving officers due for promotion are not overlooked, in order not to create tension within the armed forces.
“It is a natural cycle; if you delay it too much, then let us go back to the first social media document that was in circulation, stating that a number of colonels had to go home because you had kept certain officers at certain positions stagnant and virtually blocked the opportunity for these other officers to move up. So, the longer you delay, the worse the problem becomes.”
“The government must exercise moral courage and be very fair in whom it chooses to become the new CDS, who becomes the new Chief of Army Staff, and where the other service commanders will be, in such a way that we don’t create a situation where we will overlook a certain officer and create all these tensions.”
