The Ghana Highways Authority in the Volta Region is calling for an amendment of the road safety regulations to impose more severe punishments on individuals involved in the erection of unauthorized speed ramps on major highways.
Recently, the police arrested two individuals in connection with the creation of an unauthorized speed ramp along the Ho-Sogakope highway in the Volta Region. The suspects were captured in a viral video in the company of other culprits causing damage to the highway with concrete blocks and other materials.
Speaking to Citi News, Aminu Issakah Abubakar, the Volta Regional Director of the Ghana Highways Authority, emphasized that although efforts are underway to remove all speed-calming devices on major highways in the region, strict laws must be enforced to act as a deterrent.
“Things have to be revised, and if people know that engaging in such actions will only result in a fine of GH¢500 or a trivial penalty, they won’t have any fear to carry out their activities. Considering the current situation, we recognize the need to revise the law to implement a more stringent penalty, which will assist us in addressing unauthorized ramp constructions.”
