The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana is advising its members to refrain from joining two unions formed by its former local executives who broke away.
These breakaway groups are the Tertiary Education Workers Union, Ghana, and the Technical Universities Workers Association of Ghana, comprising former local executives of TEWU of TUC Ghana.
TEWU of TUC asserts that the local leaders chose to break away due to their failure to account for their stewardship.
Speaking to the media, the General Secretary of TEWU of TUC, Mark Dankyira Korankye said the two groups do not have bargaining certificates or collective agreements raising doubts about their ability to advocate for the interests of non-teaching staff at traditional and technical universities.
“The breakaway groups had sort to use the media reports of their purported merger, to deceive the unsuspecting non-teaching staff at the traditional and technical universities and the general public that, they have the mandate to engage government and other State agencies in negotiating bargaining related issues.
“Our checks at the relevant agencies, including the Labour Department, indicate that none of the two breakaway groups possesses bargaining certificates or collective agreements. This raises the question of the basis upon which the supposedly merged group plans to negotiate on behalf of junior staff, some Senior Staff, and Senior Members at Public and Technical Universities”.
Mark Dankyira Korankye further called for calm and urged members to remain resolute as TEWU of TUC continues to champion their interests.
“It should, therefore, be noted that the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union, TEWU of TUC-Ghana is in court as part of the due process to get the leadership of the breakaway groups, to account for their stewardship during their tenure as local executives of TEWU of TUC-Ghana. It’s important to note that only a minority of junior staff in Public and Technical Universities belong to these breakaway groups”.
“t is inaccurate for these groups to claim representation of the junior staff in the university communities. We therefore, call on all Teachers and Education Workers Union (TEWU) of TUC-Ghana members in all the Public and Technical universities to remain calm as we collaborate with TEWU of TUC Ghana National leadership works towards concluding a harmonized conditions of service for the junior staff, senior staff and senior members in both the public and the technical universities in Ghana”.
