Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Benjamin Agordzo has revealed the vilification he endured under both the current and past New Patriotic Party (NPP) governments.
ACP Agordzo claimed that the persecution against him by the NPP government began during former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s regime, when he was dismissed from the police service over something trivial.
During an interview on Face to Face on Citi TV, hosted by Umaru Sanda Amadu, he recalled how he was vilified under Kufuor’s administration for openly commenting about the government.
“This is not the first time it has happened to me [persecution]. It happened in their previous regime, the elephant regime, during former President Kufuor’s time. I was dismissed from the police service for a flimsy reason, for standing for the truth in 2007,” he disclosed.
He bemoaned how he had to appeal before being recalled to the police service, but his rank was reduced from Superintendent to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).
“I had to appeal and was called back two years later in 2009 before former President Kufuor left office. I must be frank that the recall was done before the former president left office. I was reduced from Superintendent to Deputy Superintendent of Police, and then I climbed to Assistant Commissioner of Police.”
ACP Agordzo denied being anti-NPP and refuted being pro-NDC.
“Have you seen anything like that about me? Have you seen me in their colours or any other colour? [NDC]. When it mattered most, I served Ghana, I served both parties NPP and NDC. I’m the type who will do my work the way it should be. Maybe they [NPP] don’t like me, the way they have treated me, I can say they don’t like me, or maybe they don’t like my name, but I have not given them cause to dislike me. The actors for the state today from the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice [Godfred Dame Yeboah], Defense Minister [Dominic Nitiwul], and Minister of Interior [Ambrose Dery] are NPP people.”
He touted himself for being part of the police leadership that ensured the 2016 general election was peaceful.
ACP Agordzo also denied showing bias against the NPP during the 2016 elections.
“One thing I’m proud of when it’s mentioned is the 2016 elections. I was at the centre of it, the planning and everything under the supervision of COP Christian Tetteh Yohunu [former Director-General in charge of Administration] and then IGP Mr. John Kudalor. Not even a fly died, compare that with subsequent elections in Ghana.
During that time, all the big people in NPP today, the previous chair, general secretary, and other people, called for meetings at the police headquarters. Did I show any signs of bias against any of them? They could have mentioned my name, they could have told me about it, those who are biased, you know them.”
He insisted on being persecuted, stating that he would ensure his promotion to Commissioner was restored.
