The Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini has called for Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh to address Parliament on the ongoing erratic power supply in the country.
With parts of Ghana experiencing frequent power outages, Suhuyini expressed concerns about the potential health hazards and challenges faced by citizens, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan.
During a recent session in Parliament, Suhuyini highlighted the urgency of the matter, noting that the Energy Minister was expected to provide information on the power situation but failed to do so.
He emphasized that the issue of electricity supply is crucial, especially during Ramadan, when people rely on consistent power supply for cooking and storing meals for suhoor and iftar.
He called on the Speaker of Parliament to request the Energy Minister’s presence and provide clarity on the power challenges facing the country, as the situation could potentially lead to health issues such as Cerebrospinal Meningitis in affected areas.
“Mr Speaker, this is Ramadan, and in most parts of the country, the weather is very, very bad, and people sleep in darkness, and very soon we may have cerebrospinal meningitis on our hands from some other parts of this country.
“That is why we must get the Minister of Energy to also brief us on the power situation, and if possible, give us a timetable so that people can plan better because they cook their meals and they need to store them to take for suhoor and iftar.”
