Elizabeth Kaakie Mann, a former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Ga East Municipal Assembly and a member of the NPP Greater Accra Regional Campaign Committee, has voiced her disapproval of recent remarks made by Alan Kyerematen, the Founder and Leader of the Movement for Change.
Kyerematen urged Christians to vote for a ‘Christlike’ president in the upcoming December 2024 elections, underlining the nation’s predominantly Christian population.
He emphasized the importance of electing a leader who shares the religious beliefs of the majority.
However, in an interview with Citi News, Mrs. Mann called on Kyerematen to retract his statement and issue an apology for what she views as an inappropriate suggestion.
Mrs. Mann’s criticism seems to stem from concerns regarding the potential exclusion of candidates based on their religious affiliation, which she believes could be perceived as discriminatory and contrary to the principles of democracy and inclusivity.
Mrs Mann said, “We are all Ghanaians, living in harmony and there is peace in the country. The peace we are enjoying is a result of us tolerating each other, whether being Muslim, Christian or traditionalist. His statement seeks to bring chaos amongst religious groups in the country and we are calling on him to apologise and retract the statement.”
She further indicated that leaders should be guided with their message during the campaigning period in order not to divide the country.
“Dr. Bawumia is a unifier and tolerates every religion, you would see him in the church and also in the mosque. He attends every event no matter who you are or where you come from or your religion,” she said.
She called on Ghanaians to elect leaders based on competence and merit and not on religious grounds.
