The government has assured members of the Ghana Mineworkers’ Union of its commitment to working to revamp the Prestea and Bogoso mines, which are operated by Future Global Resources (FGR).
Aggrieved workers of Future Global Resources in November 2023 gave the government two months to take over the mines and grant the concession to another investor due to what they alleged was a lack of investment and mismanagement of the mine.
Members of the Ghana Mineworkers’ Union who supported the aggrieved FGR staff have been picketing at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in support of their colleagues’ demands and were met by the sector minister, Samuel A. Jinapor, on Thursday, April 25.
A statement released by the Lands Ministry following the meeting urged the various stakeholders to work together to ensure the revamping of the mines.
“The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, on Thursday, 25th April, 2024, engaged members of the Mine Workers Union who were picketing at the Ministry and assured them of Government’s commitment to working with all stakeholders to revamp the Prestea and Bogoso mines, and secure the welfare of its workers.”
The statement indicated that revamping the mine will help protect workers’ welfare and livelihoods and also conveyed the government’s commitment to efficient and sustainable exploitation of Ghana’s natural resources.
“The Ministry calls on all stakeholders to lend the needed support to Government and the Company [FGR] to revamp the mine, protect the employment of the workers, and the livelihoods of those who depend on the mining operations.
“The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, under the distinguished leadership of President Akufo-Addo, continues to assure the general public of its unflinching commitment to the efficient, effective and sustainable exploitation and management of the natural resources of our country, in the spirit of transparency, anchored on integrity and utmost good faith, for the benefit of the Ghanaian people.”
