The Council of State has expressed satisfaction with the Ghana Police Service’s preparations to ensure maximum security before, during, and after the 2024 general elections.

The Council emphasised the importance of engaging all stakeholders in the election process to maintain a violence-free environment.

Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, during a meeting with the Council of State as part of its meeting with stakeholders ahead of the 2024 polls, assured that the police would continue to perform their traditional roles of maintaining law and order and protecting life and property during the elections.

He emphasized that the security measures put in place for the upcoming elections would be the same as those used to maintain peace and reduce crime in the country.

“We are conducting this election with maximum security, but we have not forgotten our traditional role of maintaining law and order and protecting life and property.

“We want to assure you that the eyes we have opened, the extent of it towards ensuring that we have an excellent and peaceful election, we are going to use the same magnitude to ensure commitment towards performing our traditional roles.”

Nana Otuo Siriboe II, Chairman of the Council of State, commended the IGP for keeping stakeholders informed about the security measures being taken and engaging various sectors, such as the clergy, traditional authorities, and judiciary.

He also mentioned that this meeting with the Council of State would not be the last, as continued engagement is crucial for a successful and peaceful election process.

“We are also happy to observe that the IGP sees it as part of his duties to keep informing all stakeholders as to what is taking place and that’s engaged with the clergy, traditional authorities, judiciary and other agencies so as to get everybody on board because an election involves everybody even if you don’t vote, the results affect you so it’s proper that we have this engagement so we commend the IGP for this effort and we expect they’re going to continue and we are assured that this meeting with the council of states won’t be the last one.”
