First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo, hosted the Merck Foundation Ghana Alumni Summit and Award Ceremony, marking a significant milestone in the partnership between her office and the Merck Foundation.
Since 2018, the collaboration has enabled Ghana to build healthcare capacity, transform patient care, break infertility stigma, and support girl education.
In the span of nearly six years, the Merck Foundation has provided 143 scholarships for local Ghanaian doctors across 40 diverse disciplines. This initiative has significantly enhanced access to equitable and quality healthcare solutions in many specialities, leading to a revolutionary transformation in Ghana’s health services delivery.
Education for girls is another area where the partnership has made strides. The partnership ensures that girls are heard, seen, and empowered for a great future.
The partnership has also facilitated several media trainings to help break the silence on sensitive social and health issues, expanding awareness of key social issues in Ghana.
The First Lady expressed her excitement about the progress made, stating, “Merck Foundation has allowed us to access new resources, knowledge, and networks.”
The First Lady also highlighted the impact of the Merck Foundation’s “More Than a Mother” Ambassador programme in breaking the taboo around infertility in the African context. The programme has encouraged Ghanaians to be more open about infertility, seek help, and reduce stigma.
Mrs Akufo-Addo commended the Merck Foundation’s awards for Musicians, Fashion Designers, Filmmakers, students, and potential talents in the arts. These awards have promoted the discussion of critical social issues and given young people the opportunity to showcase their talents.
The First Lady congratulated Merck Foundation for winning the “Best Health Sector Philanthropy of the Year 2023” award at the Ghana Philanthropy Awards.
She praised the leadership of Frank Stangenberg-Haverkamp and Dr. Rasha Kelej for their remarkable efforts to improve lives in Ghana and across Africa and Asia.
Mrs Akufo-Addo once again welcomed the Merck Foundation team to Ghana, expressing her gratitude for their significant contributions.
