National Democratic Congress, NDC, Member of Parliament for Bodi in the Western Region, Sampson Ahi, has been campaigning vigorously ahead of the referendum that will allow for a new region to be created out of the current Western Region.

“The creation of the Western North Region was in our [NDC] manifesto. We promised the people of Northern part of Western Region that we were going to create new regions for them, and NPP also made that promise.”

“After the elections we did not win, NPP won, and therefore we see the creation of regions as a project which is bought by all the people living in the Northern part of Western Region. We just finished creating awareness about the elections. Three days ago, myself and the Western Regional Minister were campaigning for the region. I support the creation of regions, and we are doing it here devoid of partisan affiliation.”

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission says it is ready for the referendum which is expected to open at 7:00am and close at 5:00pm on Thursday, 27th December, 2018.

The exercise will be conducted in Western, Northern, Volta, and Brong-Ahafo and Northern Regions.

Already, presiding officers have been trained and coordinators appointed to oversee the exercise.

Director of Communications at the Electoral Commission, Eric Kofi Dzakpasu, told Citi News security arrangements have been made and materials dispatched.

In the Oti area, one of the proposed six regions, there have been a few concerns from those kicking against it.

The Referendum Coordinator, Fred Tetteh, however told Citi News that  there’s calm ahead of the exercise.

“As of now there is no incident, there is no security concern in the area. Everything is in place and we anticipate a very peaceful and successful election.”

A campaigner for the new Oti Region, Parke-Davis Magyigbe, also told Citi News they are certain of victory.
