The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture has launched the Electronic Monitoring System (EMS) to be piloted on three industrial trawlers

The introduction of the EMS is to ensure transparency and accountability in the fishing industry

Speaking at the launch of the EMS, Sector Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson said the pilot phase will last for a period of 12 months following which there will be a full rollout by 2025.

“We are today, witnessing the start of the pilot phase of the EMS where we will deploy on three industrial trawlers and the pilot phase will be for a period of twelve months.”

She also indicated that the Ministry will train personnel on the deployment of the EMS to ensure its successful implementation.

Other activities to be undertaken during the pilot phase will include the establishment of a monitoring and control centre, training of fisheries officers to handle the deployment of EMS equipment, and analyse of EMS data.

“The estimated cost for the pilot phase is $250,000, and it is funded by USAID, with technical support from the Nature Conservatives,” the Minister added.
