Member of Parliament for Tema West, Carlos Ahenkorah, has asserted that he does not regret snatching uncounted ballots during the election of a speaker for the 8th parliament.
The Tema West legislator faced widespread criticism over his attempt to thwart the process that led to the election of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Alban Bagbin over the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Prof. Mike Oquaye as head of the law-making body on January 7, 2021.
Addressing the media at the ongoing NPP parliamentary primaries, Carlos Ahenkorah, however, complained about the lack of cooperation between the speaker and the majority in parliament, stressing that it’s always a herculean task for government policies to be passed.
He lamented the lack of appreciation by the NPP despite the sacrifices he has made for the party.
“That has a lot to do with my love for the party and my thinking as far as my persona is concerned. I don’t know about you, I don’t know how you will sit for someone to enter your house and snatch your baby’s toy and move away with it, and you will sit unconcerned without fighting for your child. I don’t know how you have a party you claim you love. And people who don’t align with your concept would try as much as possible to get something against you. And when you have an opportunity also against them, it becomes wrong.
He added, “You mentioned when I snatched ballot papers, but you refused to realize that my opponents did it three times before I did what I did. And I did it only in support of my party. I did it to ensure that we don’t get an NDC person to become a speaker under Nana Akufo-Addo [President]. Today when that didn’t succeed, look at what is happening in parliament. Is it something you like as a Ghanaian? Are you telling me we are doing what MPs are supposed to do? Or do you only prefer as a Ghanaian to see only negativities? Today, policies come to parliament, and it has to be a fight before these policies are passed into law.”
