Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, the government spokesperson on governance and security, has appealed to Ghanaians to prioritize settling their electricity bills to avoid potential power disconnections during a time of significant power crisis in the country.
The call comes in response to threats by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to disconnect the power supply to hospitals with outstanding debts totalling 261 million Ghana Cedis.
The looming disconnection has sparked concerns, particularly from the minority, who are urging the government to intervene to prevent disruptions that could impact both hospital operations and patients’ health.
Speaking on The Big Issue with Selorm Adonoo on Saturday, March 16, 2024, Mr Boakye-Danquah acknowledged the challenging situation and stressed the importance of settling utility bills to avoid potential disconnections.
He emphasized the significance of paying for the electricity used, urging Ghanaians to comply with utility bill payments and avoid illegal connections.
“And also [let us] encourage the Ghanaian people to pay their utility bills. If you use power, it is important that you pay for the power that you use. If you don’t want to pay for the power that you use, the ECG will come after you.
“We should encourage people to pay their utility bills, we should encourage people to stop the illegal connection of electricity, and we should also ensure that there is the ease of acquisition of metres and so that it doesn’t cause people to do illegal connections because it’s against the laws.”
