The Ashanti Regional Women’s Wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly called Chairman Wontumi, to retract and apologise over alleged disparaging remarks he made against NDC’s running mate, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang.
The Women’s Wing has, therefore, issued a one-week ultimatum to Chairman Wontumi to retract and apologize to the NDC’s running mate or face their wrath.
Chairman Wontumi is alleged to have made derogatory remarks about Prof Opoku-Agyemang, suggesting she was secretly married to Mr Mahama and that she originated from the Northern Region, not the Central Region.
However speaking during a news conference in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional Women’s Wing of the NDC condemned Chairman Wontumi’s utterances.
Beatrice Togborloh, Kwadaso Constituency Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress, described Chairman Wontumi’s comments as pathetic.
“We are here because of Chairman Wontumi. It is simply pathetic for a regional chairman of a political party to paddle with such a serious untruth with disdain. We the Ashanti Women organisers together with my colleagues, for the avoidance of any doubt, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemeng, was born and bred in Cape Coast.
“I am the Kwadaso Women’s organiser for the NDC, and we are telling the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP to provide evidence to back his claims otherwise, he should come and apologise.
“Does it matter where a person comes from before you can become a vice president of this nation? What we do is whether the person is experienced and competent. The woman has Ghanaians at heart. So, we are telling the Ashanti Regional Chairman Wontumi to come and retract his statement and apologise,” she stated.
