In an official statement released by General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party Justin Kodua Frimpong on December 11, 2023, it was announced that aspirants participating in the upcoming parliamentary primaries are required to pay a non-refundable Development Fee of Forty Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHC40,000).
This decision has stirred discontent among incumbent NPP members of parliament, stakeholders, and grassroots party members. Concerns have been raised regarding the seeming exploitative nature of the General Secretary’s actions.
Some Critics argue that the action joins a growing list of other awkward decisions by the General Secretary since assuming office.
It is increasingly becoming difficult to challenge those who say that these actions cannot be taken by an experienced politician whose party is seeking to obtain the overarching goal of securing a third consecutive term.
The NPP wants to break the 8 and all members are focusing our energies towards that objective but how do we justify some of these actions which tend to create the wrong impression in the minds of the public?
Is the General Secretary mindful of how this looks to the public? Even within the party, there’s rancour following the announcement talk less among the Ghanaian people whom we are seeking to convince.
I’m strongly convinced that if the national chairman decides to give this decision a further thought and consideration he will call the general secretary to order.
